Re: Mercruiser 888 starting problem
My solenoid test has always been if I can short the posts and get it to turn over, or on must Ford solenoides I've had die, I could tap them a few times with the end of a screwdriver and get it to work one/two more times. If it were automotive, its $7 bucks at autozone, the marine version is probably no more than $25.

I guess you could always use a meter on the starter post to see if current flows when you turn the switch or to see if the field wire has power.

I usually don't spend much time testing them. If they are suspect and I can bypass them and get action, I replace. Used to have a car that went through one/yr like clockwork. It has to be a Ford thing. Last time I sat one on the counter at the parts store, the guy looked at it..."Ford, huh?". "Yup".
