Mercruiser 888 shift interrupter troubles

So the other problem I'm having is with the shift interruptor. The engine quits when I shift to neutral. I read the excellent post from Don S that explains how the system works,

but I think mine is a bit different. The shift interrupter is not where his diagram shows it, at the end of the cable. Instead there is a device that looks like it could be the interrupter located at the pivot. The pivot plate seems to be cammed so that it engages the switch at a particular position... but I'm not sure how it would work, as there is no back-pressure from the cable sleeve to activate it momentarily as described in Don's post. I don't really understand it. Has anyone seen this before, know what I'm talking about or how to fix it?

This is a 1972 Formula 233 with a Ford 302 and a Mercruiser 888 outdrive.

post some pics, maybe you looking at the reverse lock valve? Shift interupter is mounted on the plate with the shift cables.

The 888 shift interrupter is right where the cable comes up from the transom mounts to the shift plate. There is a reverse lock valve with some blue wires that go to the trim pump. That is not the problem. The interrupter is on the starboard side of that plate. You either need to adjust or replace your shift cable. Your interrupter switch is working since the engine shuts down. The boat has to be in the water to have back pressure on the shift cable sheath, it won't do it on land.
