Sounds good, I'll use a block of wood to bang it back, what is the pan rail you're referring to? Are you talking about making sure the oil pan surface is flat?
yes. stamped oil pans have a tendency to distort the pan rails where the bolts are. typical fix is to straighten them at any service.

Are you referring to the bit of metal that's sticking up around most of the bolt holes? What's the best way to get rid of them? My first thought would be grinder but I don't want to mess up the black coating either.

best video I could find

Thanks! I used the ball peen hammer to knock back the raised edges and they just keep falling off, I'm assuming that's correct and should be fine? The surface is smooth now though

Does this engine not have the stamped metal bars around the oil pan to spread the clamping pressure from the oil pan bolts? If not, I'd get some. They prevent the distortion of the pan and help seal better.

I'm wondering if those inserts were used to stop the bolts from crushing (over tightening) the oil pan gasket? Similar to the metal inserts used in a lot of valve and oil pan gaskets.

What does the parts list show? Possible to look at a replacement oil pan online?
