While cruising at step I heard a loud pop from the engine, accompanied by black smoke from exhaust. The engine started stuttering like it was going to stall. I immediately throttled back and it seemed run close to normal. At present, I cannot get the engine up to step rpm, even at full throttle. I originally thought it was a blown hose between after cooler and the turbo but the hoses seem intact and I could detect no leaks with the engine running at idle. I live in Juneau, AK and can find no one familiar with this engine. I know that someone posted a similar issue a few years ago but never posted a resolution to the problem. Help!

Re: Mercruiser 7.3L D-Tronic

Howdy,

Loud pops associated with turbocharged diesels running at "working" power settings, are usually related to a turbocharger-discharge hose popping off, or an intercooler blowing up etc...

You might try putting a boost gage on the turbo discharge and see if it's making any boost at all.... Black smoke when you try to accelerate can be related to little or no boost.

I am not all that familiar with the Marine Harvester (IHC Corn Binder), but it should make boost levels exceeding 20psi or so....

Most turbocharged diesels make little or no measurable boost at idle (the turbo still spins though)

If you want to do anything yourself, you'll need to buy the Mercury OEM service manual. I am willing to bet it won't be cheap....

Or......someone like Don will jump right in there with the link to the PDF version! :p

Rick

I'm only letting him borrow my manuals. He has to give them back. ;)

I just "borrowed" them too!! (I swear I'll give them back!!:D)

After a little perusal of the manual, it appears that ANY troubleshooting will have to start with connection of the appropriate Mercury SCAN tool.

It will probably tell exactly where to look for the problem....

Hello. Can you advise me where to find the oil pressure sensor on the Mercruiser 7.3 D-Tronic engine. My low oil pressure light is not on. Thank you.
