Tired of the mechanic guess work - costing way too much money. Replaced shifter assembler, shifter, cables because would not come out of gear. Mechanics also said I header/riser/oil sending uinit, plug, couple other things. Engine will start in idle but only run a few seconds. When I put shifter forward, engine will start at high RPM but will not stay running if I drop to neutral. Any ideas. Mechanic gave up.

Not sure about your shifter issue, but the no idle sounds like it could be your IAC valve.

Scofflaw - thanks for the info. I was kinda thinking the same thing. Now to see if I can do this myself. You know this YNC(SS) is not mechanically inclined.

Sounds like you are about to go down the same road. Throw parts at it and hope for the best.

Have you tried things like hooking it up to a diagnostic scan tool and see what is going on? Checking the fuel pump pressures when running etc.?
You know Troublshooting instead of replacing parts.

What's the Merc serial number of your engine, 5.0EFI doesn't tell us much.

If that motor runs good thru the rest of the power band and that's its only issue,,,,,,yup IAC. Way too common a problem not to suspect it
