Mercruiser 5.0 228 1983 yr

I just picked up a 21' boat.

Engine is a 1983 Mercruiser 228 V8 5.0.

The lower unit is a rebuilt 1991 Alpha 1 Outdrive.

Engine was taken apart before I received it, previous owner said "cylinder #2" had no compression. I have the engine in a few boxes.

Question is: What other type of engine can I use in replace of rebuilding the 228 which might not actually run if it is put together?
