hi all,

looking for your thoughts. our starter has gone bad and looking to get it rebuilt. The local rebuild shop has suggested that we do not have a marine starter and wants to sell us a new one. Apparently, the starter doesnt have the shield for sparks and this could obviously cause a fire because of fumes...

thoughts? we have never had it replaced but not sure what the previous owners have done.

I have to admit, I didn't know that myself. lol..

I've always had my original starter rebuilt. We have great local shop that does alternators and starters. You should see his shop, it's a disaster of parts scattered, but he knows what everything is. The last time I went there, I didn't even have to wait for mine to get done. He had a couple already rebuilt I just did a swap and paid him.

470 uses a standard chevy starter.
No

470 uses a ford starter. Factory came with a divorced solenoid. There are newer style ford starters that have the solenoid mounted on them but fitment can be an issue with these

Yup, meant to follow up on this. I knew it was an auto pattern, makes sense that it's Ford. The newer 470s (3.7) do have an integrated solenoid with a slave, the earlier ones don't have the slave. Thanks for the correction.

THE 470 engine starter has a total shield .then the engine cranks and does not start the engine , then the starter has a brake to not rotate in the wrong rotation . when the engine starts the starter drops the brake rotation ..
bushings / motor commutator brushes ....fix it ..
