Check your idle mixture setting. There may be a blockage. You could try unscrewing the idle mixture screw and blowing air through it to claer blockage. Then turn it all the way in till it LIGHTLY seats, then back out 1 1/4 turns. adjust in and out from there to give a smooth idle at 650-700 rpm.with the idle stop screw.

Ok so I went to my friends house where my boat got towed yesterday and checked spark and I had none so I changed the coil nothing I changed points and it started but stalled after 40 sec started got it to start a couple of times but stalled then I realized that I never changed the condenser and new one was still package so I changed it and it started just took it back to my boat club which is 10 miles from my friends place and it ran great. Now I changed points condeser last year is that normal for a condeser to die that often also when I checked for power on the coil with wire off the coil and ignition on I was getting 11.7 volts I thought it should be aroubd 8 volts but not sure thanks again for your help

I have read conflicting reviews on Petronix kit does it make the 470 smoother then ever or should I stay with the points and just keep a spare kit in the boat. Also is my power to the coil normal it was around 11.6 volts thanks again

Ayuh,.... An electronic conversion don't make a motor run better, it just eliminates the points, 'n the chore of replacin' the points,....

I converted over to full electronic when I had my 3.7. I strongly suggest you doing the same. It sure takes the guess work out of it. With the electronic ignition upgrade you don't have to worry about trying to troubleshoot the points & co sensor when it comes to ignition issues. With electronic you either have it or you don't have it (spark).

I need help guys this boat is driving me nuts so I took off yesterday to my favorite spot with 5 people on board boat ran great when it was time to come home started right up heading back at 3600 rpm started to bog down slowed down to around 2000rpm would run ok and maintained if I were to bring it back up to 36 rpm it would do it for a about a min then bog down again it was a very slow ride home and finally stalled out 10 feet from my dock what luck any help is always appreciated thanks

Your coil may be weak and failing after it gets warm. You can check the resistance on the primary and secondary windings in the coil... I keep a spare new coil in the boat's tool box. along with the rest of the ignition parts.

Primary resistance should be 1.5 Ohms with a min. 1.1 Ohms
(test the primary side which would be the test leads on the (+) and (-) terminals on the coil)

Secondary resistance between 9,400 - 11,700 Ohms
(test the secondary side with one test lead on either the (+) or (-) and the other test lead on the spark plug output terminal)..

if not within those numbers replace the coil. Test using a digital multimeter set to read resistance on the Ohm's scale.

Hi Eric thanks for responding on the way back yesterday I stopped and changed the condenser again since I thought that was my problem drove it a little bit then it started bogging down again so I stopped and changed the coil with a new one that I keep in the boat hoping it was that but still bogging down . is there a coil that I can buy that I can use 12 volt power and still use points. I checked my purple wire with key on and wire off and I am getting 11.7 volt so I am not sure if that would cause the problem I am having thanks again

Yes, Petronix Ignitor II, 91146A with the Flamethrower II coil. You run A full 12 volts to the coil + by removing the purple resistance wire and replacing it with a piece of stranded copper wire spliced into the purple choke wire. One advantage of the E ignition is that it adjust the dwell according to engine RPM for better ignition at higher speeds.

Install is pretty straight forward. Special tool is a screwdriver ;)
Timing is unchanged, 4' BTDC IIRC. Obviously you no longer have to mess with the gap or dwell.

You need to most careful when installing the ring to the distributor shaft. Before installing the ring remove the distributor base plate and clean up the advance weights and springs. Apply some light oil and check that everything moves freely. The ring is a friction fit and is keyed for the distributor shaft. Select a socket that will pass by the distributor shaft and contact the ring. Put the socket over the shaft and on the ring. TAP the ring down carefully listening for a change in the sound when it seats. STOP. The ring can be damaged if you are too rough with it. If you don't get it "seated" all the way down your rotor can ride too high and contact your cap and tear it up when you start the engine. Run your wiring from the pickup to avoid chaffing and pinching when the cap is installed. Use grommets or RTV silicone to protect the wires.where they exit the distributor. SOLDER all your new connections. Don't rely on the crimp connection alone. I set my timing at 6* BTDC on my 470 and I like it there.
