I have a Mercruiser 470 and it was fine, Ive had her out of the water all winter, just put her back in.
On the trailer she revs right through the rev range in gear or out of gear no problem at all but in the water out of gear again she is fine, revs right through the rev range no problem but in gear she wont and just dies.
I fact thats not totally true. She goes into gear and ticks over and runs fine c750 revs. At c1000 rev she just about runs but you start to get a slight backfire through the carb, at c1100 she back fires through the carb and dies.
At first I started with the basics, spark plugs, points etc all fine, ever borrowed a friends timing light (Snap on, the real thing) timing was out but now ajusted spot on but still does exactly the same thing.

Please help I am totally lost.

I had a backfiring problem with my 470, turned out to be a bad headgasket and valves. A compression check might be in order. Can't hurt:rolleyes:.

When you checked the ignition, did you check the point dwell? If not, you should.
