Re: mercruiser 470 cam seals repair

Back in Post#9, I had a link with someone who has also done the job. These are not my words but copied and pasted from that article ;):

Chicago Rawhide was the manufacturer of Speedie Sleeves and they are available in a multiple of sizes that include the range required for the 470's cam nose. (NOTE 2 PER NOSE)

They are also available from National and for some strange reason they look exactly the same, only they cost less. I used 3 of CR and 1 of National and could't tell the diff other than packaging.

The ones I bought were each complete with a ' tube tool' to apply them and the rings were easily snipped with cutters and removed. It's almost like snipping a tin lid and then tearing it around carefully away from the sleeve. Any EDGE burrs left are CAREFULLY removed with a fine file/stone and then crocus cloth (very fine emery cloth). This part is very important if you don't want to rip the new seals.

If the fit is a tad looser than you'd like due to size availability restrictions they can be applied with some JB Weld. CR supplies full instructions for sizing.

Done properly you'll never be back to this area of the engine. As you can see from Dave's pics the chain tensioner is very visible, you could easily rob from your spare engine if need be.

CR is part of SKF now and has amalagamated operations, so I can't find original site but here's a lead

SKF Speedi-Sleeve

YUKK- its in metric now so I hope you have a metric caliper/micrometer but just in case NOT I found the ones that I think I used and have found the sketch and old CR chart for selecting.

My own shafts (2) measured in at 0.872" and I elected to use the CR part number 99087 who's spec is Nom shaft diam = 0.875 with min shaft diam of 0.873 and max of 0.877- this was the best match (and I think for deksea too). You can now understand why I used a little JB weld in the grooves.

The same product is still available from SKF I found the listing here and they even converted to imp measure.. Please measure accurately and choose the size that fits your's not mine although I wouldn't be surpirsed if they workled out very close. Your vintage is probably closer to Daves than mine but I think other than the method of attaching the impellar the cams were identical.

I removed the stator and sold it on ebay... put the funds into the boat account. ;)

Left the magnets alone, they were on well and didn't want to go looking for trouble.

Re: mercruiser 470 cam seals repair

Guys I am stumped I before I put the damper on I decided to pressure test the engine and I found an air leak coming from the weep hole wtf !!! Do I need to run it first for the seals to adapt to the cam or did I miss something? Ps I never drank so much until I started working on my 470 thanks again

Re: mercruiser 470 cam seals repair

Did you install the seals with the garter springs facing away from the block ( toward the coolant)? If you did it should seal the warm coolant under pressure, the seal should expand and make better contact (I hope). Might be time to just give it a try. Good luck.

Yes I did install the springs faces away from block I even put lock tight around the seal when I press them in so that it would seal to the cover I think I might fill the system with water and give it a try at least now its going to leak out the weep and not get in the oil Can I run engine with out the damper on or would that throw the balance on the crank off ?

Re: mercruiser 470 cam seals repair

Ok guys I ran the motor today and it is leaking at the weep hole not much but I see a little drip every minute do you think it will seal up after a couple more runs? I only ran it on the muffs never really go the rpm up too much . I was thinking of running it and see if it gets better or worst let me know your thoughts thanks

That's a tough one. I guess I would give it a try. You will want to get antifreeze in there as soon as it seals to prevent rust.

Re: mercruiser 470 cam seals repair

Unfortunately, I had the same issue. Pulled the cover back off and found the seal had a small tear, I think from an edge on the sleeve. I also had installed the sleeve a tad off.

Had to order a new one of each and got it perfect the 2nd time around.

I have a feeling if it's leaking now it is going to continue until you inspect it.

Eric when you first did it how much of a leak was it ? And did you run it for a while or just take it apart again

Re: mercruiser 470 cam seals repair

It was a steady drip like before I did the job. I didn't bother running like that except for the 15-minutes or so, whatever it was.

I tore it back down and inspected to find the torn seal, but that was me. Give it a shot. Those speedi sleeves should be a little wider. To me, didn't seem like much forgiveness in locating the seals on them.

Re: mercruiser 470 cam seals repair

I suppose you could just keep adding sleeves to cover the whole shaft but if the seal fall in between the sleeves that's probably not good .
Why don't they make a wider sleeve nobody knows . By the way I ran my engine for 20 min again today and used a mirror to look at the weep hole I did not see any drops of a/f maybe good is with me but it maybe ok I will run a few more times on the muffs and see how it goes I will update post thanks for all the help you guys stony Eric you guys really no your stuff on the 470s
