Drive: Here's an old IBOATS thread that they say weighs about 80 for the drive. If you're wanting to figure bellhousing, gimbal ring and transom assembly, then probably more like 125.

Did you mean the 190 hp v6 engine? If so, here's a link where they say it's 425 pounds. Not sure if that's with all the accessories or not.

Something tells me that he's referring to a 3.7L "470" aluminum block engine..........

Me too, and in that case, it's nowhere near 1000lbs.

In 2004 (closest magazine I had handy) Mercruiser lists the iron block 3.0 with an Alpha One at 635lbs. A 4.3 is just 840 pounds. I wouldn't think the 470/3.7 would weigh much more than the 3.0, if at all, and certainly not as much as the 4.3.

I believe that the 470 weighs about 200 pounds or so less than the 4.3.

Re: Mercruiser 4 cylindar 190 Hp with Alpha 1

Thanks for everyone's input. The engine is a merc 1987 224 Cu. in. 4 cylinder 190 hp with Alpha 1 drive. Poking around I found an old thread likewise and a number shows up of about 850#.

Anyway the whole reason for this exersize was to determine the center of gravity of a 19' boat constructed of fiberglass.. Using the stern as the datum point, I get 10.7 ft. And I know that's not right. I just can't figure out the range in ft. lb. for just the hull which weights 1350 lbs with out the engine. The trick is to determine the center of gravity with a hull that is pointed at one end and a big rectangle at the other end. I have no idea. Any help is appreciated thanks
Cheers Gary

An iron headded Ford 460 weighs 750 LBS. The 224 uses an iron 460 cyl head but has an aluminum block. I can't find any weight on it, but it is probably in the 550 lbs mark.

The IO forum is for repairing the drive and engine system, not so much about finding the center of gravity of a boat. I'll move this over to the Boat topics forum, maybe someone there knows that kind of information.

Now you have me interested.
What is the reason the CG is of such interest?

There real answer will be found by measuring your particular hull.
You will need to know the EXACT weight of the hull and it's CG to have any hope of being close.

Hang it from two straps with a pair of scales on the straps will allow you to calculate the CG.
Two cradles on the ground will do the same thing.

My old Lund with a 165 HP inline 6 is stated to weigh 1950# according to the brochures from that year.
The same model with an outboard is stated to weigh 1220# which to me would indicate the engine and outdrive should weigh somewhere around 770#.
The 4 cylinder should be a bit lighter.

Re: Mercruiser 4 cylindar 190 Hp with Alpha 1

Hello All
Well having thought about this CG thing last night, I decided that since I had no way to hang this boat in the air, I'll try to find a balance point as someone had suggested It's sits on a single axle trailer, so i thought the CG should be somewhere around that point.
This morning I needed to go down to the boat to check out come electrical and fuel problems and I decided to see if the axle is the CG. I removed the spare tire from it's resting place and lifted the tongue of the trailer. Well that was easy, so now what. How much effort did it take?

I need a scale. then I'll know the amount of weight I exerted to lift this thing. Probably only 10 or 15#. I moved the spare tire and rested it on the ski rack and now it's really easy to lift. Maybe only a few pounds.
So I expect the CG is pretty close to where the axle is located.

All this, just to figure out where to place the lifting straps. About 5' on each side of the axle. I'll try it next week.

Cheers GAry

..So I expect the CG is pretty close to where the axle is located.

The boat on the trailer should have 5-10% of the total weight on the coupler ball.
This puts the CG in front of the axle by 5-10% of the distance from the axle to the ball.
Measuring the weight at the ball and the total weight of the boat and trailer will allow you to calculate the CG of the combined boat and trailer.

The boat alone's CG will be nearby but not exactly the same point.

You probably want about 300 lbs. on the hitch ball.

When you look in your rear view mirror and the boat's swinging back and forth in heavy braking, you probably need to adjust your weight. It's a terrible feeling.
