Mercruiser 3.0XL - engine stalls when shifting

Just bought a used 1997 Citation with Mercruiser 3.0XL engine. initially starts up fine and shifts to forward fine...after running it for 15-30 minutes when I try to shift to neutral it cuts out. Then it won't restart. It is getting fuel. After waiting 15 minutes or so it will start back up but then when I shift forward it will then cut out...and so on and so on....Any suggestions where to start????

start by checking the lower shift cable and the cut out system. its designed to momentarily interupt the ign system when disengaging any ingear position

look for the bracket mounted high on the engine that joins the cable from the control box and the cable to the leg. on that bracket is a switch with a roller actuated arm that does what rodbolt describes. it should recenter after every shift/engine running.
