I have a mercruiser 3.0 engine an have tried to replace the starter on it as the boat shop had advised now the new starter is not meshing with the fly wheel and is only making a grinding noise and won't turn the fly wheel the old starter had 3 spacers on one side of the starter we have tried this with the new one and no improvement what else can I try to get the new starter motor to work??

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 starter problem

The 3.0 engine does not use starter shims.Your problem sounds like a worn or broken ring gear on the flywheel. It sounds like the shims were installed on the old starter for a temporary fix.

Cheers but The ring gears don't look worn and none are broken I'm not sure why the new starter fails to engage while the old one does yet they seem identical??

If you bought one of those cheap aftermarket starters, even if it's marine it may need shims. But don't use shims under only one bolt, you need full support so the starter sits flat against the shim, with new bolts and the front bracket if it had one.

With a bolt tightened full up there's about a 3mm gap on the other side witch doesn't make sense so i think we need shims but was more after us there anything else I need to check for the starter to line up properly??

Can u please explain indexes on its bolts?? And the knurling is fine although the bolt on the inside had a longer but thinner bolt we have drilled out the hole on the block in order to put an original size bolt in but we will have to use a longer bolt with a nut

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 starter problem

The starter bolts should have been the same size, the thinner bolt you took out is from a previous half a** repair! If these holes are not perfect your starter is not going to work.Have a machine shop resize the holes.
