Mercruiser 3.0 help separating upper and lower outdrive

Hello,

First off, this is my first post here. I'm pretty new to boating and engine maintenance.

So - the story so far. I have a '89 Blue Water 17" with a Mercruiser 3.0 130 (possibly 140) Gen 1 outdrive. I've had the boat for a couple of years, but have only had the opportunity to take it out a handful of times. Most recently, I had my kids out for the first time this year. We had been tooling around for about 15-20 mins, when the boat suddenly seemed to be losing power. I quickly saw that the temp was at max and immediately shut off the engine. The engine was hot enough that some smoke was coming off it (not out of it though). We got back to shore and once the engine had cooled down, I restarted and saw the temp climb again. The engine sounded fine, but I figured that the impeller must be gone. I didn't run it again.

I have the Seloc manual and watched a few YouTubes about replacing the water pump / impeller. Looked pretty straight forward even for a noob like me. Anyway, here's the problem. In a nutshell I'm unable to separate the upper and lower sections of the outdrive to access the pump. I'm certain I've removed all the necessary bolts (3 hex nuts around the front, 2 hex nuts underneath, the trim tab and one allen (hex) bolt under the trim tab). The rear of the drive does separate with some pressure (perhaps 1/8") but something seems to be holding the front closed. The drive is really clean, with no corrosion or much wear. I've tried tapping a chisel between the two halves and have also tried using the pressure of the front hex nuts (against the casing) to force the halves open, but no luck. I'm afraid that due to the overheating something inside has warped or melted together preventing the halves from separating. Looking at the diagrams in the manual I cannot see what though. The water pipe might be a culprit, but from what I can judge it looks like that sits about in the middle of the drive, at a position which does look like it is separating, even if only by a millimeter or two. It's definitely the front of the drive which refuses to separate. I've also tried hitting with a rubber mallet, but I'm wary of using too much force. The shift lever sits right at the front of the drive and that seems to be working just fine - engaging and disengaging correctly.

Am I missing a nut somewhere?

Any thoughts on this problem? Thanks!!

Sounds like you have all the fastners off but something its quite right. All the nuts and washers have been removed so there is nothing holding. I would suggest you take the whole drive off and put it on a bench. With having it for two years you need to check the alignment and boots to insure they are OK. With the drive removed you will have an easier time working on it.

Make sure the throttle handle is in the full forward position prior to pulling it apart. It will go back together the same way.

I just did mine on an 84 and it was a bugger to separate, if you keep working at it it will free up.

I was stumped myself especially after watching the videos on you tube. They make it seem like it falls off!!!!

Mine pretty much falls apart when all the nuts and bolts are taken out. Get a proper manual. You can use the Seloc to pad your knees while working on it.

First, the 2 side nuts cant be removed without some seperation first. If you did manage to remove them ,put them back on.
Tighten the side nuts back down untill you can insert a 3/8 or 7/16 open end wrench on top of the nut.slowly unscrew the nut equally on both sides. the wrench ,acting as a spacer forces the drive down as the nut goes up.
When you do see seperation , insert screwdrivers/wedges,etc. between the halves and work it apart.
DO NOT INSERT ANYTHING IN THIS AREA WHERE THE HOLE IS

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 help separating upper and lower outdrive

I just did mine last week. it was a little difficult but I kept working it with a screwdriver very carefully. How did you got the 2 nuts on the front of the drive off? you must be able to separate it a good bit if you can get them off. Just keep working it and be ready to catch it. When it goes it goes fast.

On the overheating issue. I overheated my 3.0L last year. To the point where it pretty much quit on it's own. My rubber hose from the outdrive to the transom came off. might want to check that also.
Moving on. This year first time out I lost power. could not get boat over 2000 RPM at full throttle. anyways long story short it ended up being my head gasket. It blew between 1 & 2 cylinder because of the overheating last year. . Just for S&G's you might want to run a compression check on yours . Head Gasket.jpg Just finished putting it back together a few minutes ago.

That's what happens when you overlook maintenance on a boat. It's a bugger to separate. If you replace that impeller regularly (every 2-3 years, it will come apart easy).

That hole the Doctur has shown in his picture is the passage that joins the two halves as one and the gear lube flows thru. Don't pry in that area. Everywhere else is safe.

He has a good trick there as well: use two smaller wrenchs on top of the side nuts as it's removed with another wrench to allow for more travel.

Do the complete impeller kit with the housings, not just the impeller since you overheated, and use OEM Quicksilver parts.

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 help separating upper and lower outdrive

If the overheat was from a dead impeller (most likely), then 'dry' exhaust gases have been running through the drive. Anything plastic in there is now suspect. That's the pump housing, pump base and water pocket cover. Check them all... Also the exhaust boot under the elbow needs to be checked, along with the exhaust shutter....

Chris............
Oh, seloc manual = BAD choice.... (No, honestly, a REALLY bad choice)

Here's the manuals for your engine and drive from the people who made them...

ENGINE MANUAL
DRIVE MANUAL

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 help separating upper and lower outdrive

Thank you all for your advice.

Apologies, my original post was inaccurate - I haven't actually been able to get the front side nuts off, just loose. I did try putting a small metal shim in the gap between the casing and the head of the nut and use them as 'jacks' but still no luck. I guess I'll keep trying or perhaps just take it in to the local shop - I'm sure they have some tricks up their sleeves.

I did find bits of the impeller in the water intake - so the pump (or at least impeller) is toast. Once it's apart I'll check all the other plastic parts mentioned.

Thanks also for those manuals. They definitely look more comprehensive than the Seloc I have.

Well at least we know what the trouble is. With all the other fastners removed you should be able to turn each one a bit at a time without the shim until the drive comes apart. Putting it back together is done in a simular fashion. Get the two started and slowly tighten them a bit at a time has the sides come back together. With you having such an issue do you have a pic you can post?
