Hi guys, I have a 2007 Mercruiser 3.0 with an alpha one outdrive. I have been experiencing some trouble with the drive lube reservoir, hopefully you can help! After the first ride of the season I noticed drive lube had leaked inside my bilge from the reservoir cap, after cleaning out the bilge I found a small rubber orange "plug" at the bottom of the bilge. I noticed it was about the same size as the larger hole (one large hole in the middle, and one seems to be for a vent) on top of the drive lube reservoir cap. I inserted the plug thinking that maybe this was why the drive lube was leaking into the bilge. I also replaced some drive lube to keep it in "operating range", After the next trip on the boat and returning to the dock I checked the drive lube tank and now the level had risen all the way to the cap. I unscrewed the cap and it seemed there was a strong suction because as soon as I removed the cap the level of the lube started going down right away. This seems like a very bad situation because I am not sure if the outdrive is being starved of lube?? I am not sure if the "plug" I found in the bilge is supposed to be on the cap or not, It plugs the larger hole in the center and also covers over the vent hole. I have driven the boat since with the "plug" not inserted into the lube tank cap and I wind up with a large ammount of lube in the bilge, the lube seems like there is alot of air in it when I return to the dock and it is comming out of the top of the cap and leaking all over the alternator and bilge making a huge mess.

I must also add that the boat has been operated in very choppy water, but I do not think that this is a normal occurance.

Thanks!!

Re: Mercruiser 3.0 Drive Lube Reservoir

I am not quite sure without doublechecking my motor (and might have changed since...)

in your operations manual for the motor you should have a section dedicated to checking/filling the gear lube via the monitor case - that should show pictures of the plug on the cap.
