Mercruiser 228 to replace Volvo 5.0GL, flywheel and coupler question

I bought a 1999 Chaparral Sunesta 232 with a known cracked 5.0, along with cracked manifolds.
I have in the plans an LS swap in the future, but that is going to take some time. In the meantime, I can pick up a free Merc 228. Aside from the obvious exhaust differences, which I can deal with, anyone have any idea if there is going to be a flywheel coupler issue that can't be overcome? I would hope the volvo bellhousing would bolt up. Is there going to be a incompatibility with the flywheel and coupler?
I know the 228 is going to be a step down from the 5.0 but its just for a few seasons until I get the LS swap ready to go. Thanks

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,..... Check the bolt patterns of the starters,....
Straight across is the 12" flywheel, staggered pattern is the 14" flywheel,....

The 228 is the exact same long block as the Volvo, so there's no step down, just abit older,....

the 228 motor is an early flat-tappet SBC, flywheel rated at a supposed 228hp when new, about 190hp at the prop. The 228 is a 2-piece RMS block with the big flange on the crank. the motor would have come with a 153 tooth flywheel

the '99 5.0 is roller cam vortec headed motor, about 270hp at the flywheel and about 240hp at the the prop. the motor is a 1-piece RMS crank and would have come with a 168 tooth flywheel.

you will need a new 168 tooth flywheel for the 2-piece RMS motor, new exhaust, etc. may be cheaper to pull a 1996 and later 5.7 liter from a u-pull-it

So the flywheel on my cracked 5.0 will not bolt up to this 228 motor? I'm planning on robbing just about everything off of the cracked motor. I don't know if I can take heads and pistons but they should only have one season of use on them.

no, the flywheel wont swap back and forth from a 2-piece RMS block to a 1-piece RMS block

if the block is cracked, the heads are most likely cracked.

cant take pistons and swap, that takes re-machining the bores, and most likely they are no longer round.
