Getting antsy for the salmon season, so I started to pull my lower to put a new water pump in.

And, the plastic tube that helps line up the water intake was melted. Looked up into the top half, and the water pocket had signs of heat/some melt from the outside. Gasket was okay and seal were good. I replaced them anyhow.

The impeller looked great and outside of the water pump was all ok no signs of heat.

Not sure what this means. I never run the boat without water, not even for a second.

Not sure where to go from here. OR how this happens.

You are not getting enough water through the engine and into the exhaust to cool the exhaust. Those parts are in the exhaust passage of the outdrive. Could it have been over heated before you owned it ?

would verify impeller is not slipping on its hub. Oem merc parts are worth the money here. Would make sure you are getting enough water up from out drive to thermostat housing , could be plugged at power steering cooler. Also can have elbows or exhaust manifolds corroded and plugged restricting water flow.

do you have a pic of which cooling set up you have? All of them pass some raw water when thermostat is closed so exhaust gets cooled. Somewhere that is restricted and plastic parts get hot and melt. …

the R, MR, Alpha gen one water pump isn’t the greatest, gen 2 has a much bigger pump. Willing to bet at some point it got hot or lacked water flow. Again the oem merc parts last much longer than the aftermarket ones If yiu have a non oem impeller would start there, make sure it is not pulling air in.
