Hello all,

I am trying to remove my non-functional starter from my Mercruiser 170 engine. All of the diagrams and forum posts that I have seen reference two bolts going through the starter from back to front with nuts on the front side. I see the nuts on the front side, however, I have no bolts protruding from the rear. Can anyone advise on this situation?

Yours is a forerunner of the model with the bolts coming in from the rear. You will just have to fight it out with the 2 self locking nuts to get the starter out. A thin wall 5/8”12 point box end wrench is the only thing that will do the job, unless you have a ”starter wrench” which is a curved “C” shape style of wrench.

Another day, another tool I must buy for the sake of this boat. Thank you sir.
