I had a valve job down while I had the head off, but never replaced the lifters. I've used the recommended HD30 oil.

I have the same motor and had the same problem, it ended up being the timing. I adjusted the distributor and the noise went away.

another thing you can do is pull the valve cover off and see if you have any oil up there. If you don't you have issues and that will cause a knock and many other problems in the future
