Having an issue with pulley alignment on a mid 70s Merc 165, 250 inline 6. Water pump and damper (harmonic balancer) are out of alignment by as much as a belt width. Water pump and pulley are correct parts however I have a question as to if the damper is correct. Apparently there are multiple types having either 1 or 2 belt groves and it looks as if the one with a single groove would better align but have yet to find one. Still looking to verify actual year of engine but for now the serial number on the valve cover tag is 4665746 Harmonic Balancer Part# should be 75574.

The number stamped on the water pump pulley is 3927797AF which as I understand is correct for pulley part number 52349

Still looking for a number on the damper but I was informed that it looks like a wider truck version due to the spacing between the grooves. This makes sense because there is very little clearance between the damper, timing cover and front mount.

I'm also finding out that this engine and valve cover along with attached serial number are not original to one another. No serial number on block.

Thanks,
Craig

Your probably correct with the pulley being incorrect. Suggest send a PM to Mark72/233 because he rebuilt his Formula with 2 of those

the damper is a standard GM damper. take your existing one to napa, they probably have one on the shelf

the pulleys would be mercruiser specific, however in almost 50 years, the motor may have been changed. the pulleys changed, etc.
