Hi All,

I'm new to owning a boat so hopefully I can give the correct info to get some help. I bought an older boat 87' I think that has a MerCrusier 165 engine that I'm having idle and flooding issues. From what I can tell the best start would be to either rebuild or replace the carb. Rebuild seems much cheaper than replacing, but I might be looking at wrong info. serial/model on the current carb is 13899564 which comes back to rochester carb it I think.

I have seen other threads about not using xyz make of carbs before so not sure if this is an OK carb and a rebuild would be good, or if I should be looking at a different one.

Any info would be helpful as to range of pricing I would be looking at rebuild or replace with whatever other type of carb. Just want to make sure I am getting the correct info from whoever I have do the work since I don't know too much about them.

Thanks much all.

4 cylinder or 6 cylinder? Rebuilding is always cheaper than replacing. I suggest rebuilding the carb

I believe your current carb has been replaced once before, the original part number was 1351-7356A1

Kits are $25 to $50, carbs are $300 to $500 and appears you have the 2GC model. Note there is 2 versions of this model and they both will work with the proper main jets. One model has 1 idle screw and the other has 2 idle screws

That number (1389-9564) matches up with a Mercarb for a '165' (3.7L 4 cyl)... so it appears you have the right carb. It's pretty much a Rochester, but with only one idle mixture screw.

In order to get the right repair kit for an overhaul, you'll need to identify the accelerator pump plunger cavity, which means disassembling before ordering parts.

Here is a parts diagram for your carb -> http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/s...y/30895/908/50
