Hello,

I have a 1991 Mercruiser 3.0L with a crack in the block and water in oil. I have been looking for used replacement motors from 1985 to 1999 and find that the 1980's 140 style motors have the shift and throttle cable connections on top where others are on the side of the manifold.

Is my 1991 rocker cover compatible with a 1985 140 rocker cover in which I can use my cover on a 140 to make my cable connections on the top versus on the side? What other challenges might I face with an engine from 1985 vs my 1991? Would I need to change carbs or manifolds to make sure the throttle/shift cables connect up correctly?

Thanks,

Jerry

A few years ago the same thing happened to me. I replaced the 91 3.0 with an 87 140. I used the valve cover from the 91, and the fuel pump from the 91. The manifolds and carbs were the samed on both engines. I used the wiring harness from the 91 also. It was a simple swap. The 87 engine had the shifter linkage on the top as well, but it was different enough to need to use the 91 cover. The flywheel and couplers were the same on both of my motors, but you might want to look into that as well.
