I pulled the outdrive to replace bellows and this nut fell out. Any ideas what it is and where it goes?

That's nothing I've ever seen in/on a mercruiser mr/alpha drive or transom assy

That piece was in the bellows?

certainly not anything that is supposed to be inside the bellows. Also not anything that rings a bell as to what the heck it is.

Just so we are all on the same page, which bellows was it inside, shift, exhaust or u-joint?

U-joint bellows. I guess it’s like a prize in a box of cereal. As long as it’s not supposed to be in there, I won’t put it back. Thanks very much for the replies.

That’s a grommet fitting. Sometimes used to run cables or wiring through transom (rightly or wrongly), bulkhead, deck or dash. A conduit through way for a depth transducer perhaos may be an example.

That’s from a skin fitting or wiring grommet. Often used to run or create a conduit through way for cables or similar. Perhaps outlets for something too. Found on deck, transoms, dash, bulkheads or similar. Transom transducer wiring conduit may be an example (rightly or wrongly)
Apologies. Repeated myself thinking it hadn’t posted the first one.
