Just got word from the shop that my overheating problem has led to a cracked block.Shop said there is water in the oil now. There was no water in the oil before i took it to this shop.I assume that during testing to see about the overheating they ran it too long and the block cracked. The boat ran fine before except for the overheating problem, and then it would only overheat at speed.I could run the boat all day at turtle speed with no problems.I guess it;s my word against theirs and i;m screwed rite. Can i sue the *******s for the damage..I;m pissed

The block may well have been stress cracked, and the additional heat/cooling cycles of testing just brought the issue to light. Unless you are sure the damage was NOT there before they checked the problem out you are stuck. If you believe the guys in the shop would run an engine with a stated over heating problem long enough to crack the block, you may want to find another shop to do any additional work. Not what ya wanted to hear.....just another possibility.

Re: mercruiser 120 sterndrive

I just had a phone call from my sister and was talking about the boat to her when she told me her neighbor works for Mercury marine in Seattle.I called this gal and she put me in touch with the engine tech.We have decided to repower the boat.He suggested using the Mercruiser 3.0 4cyl with a new Alpha drive.Complete engine and drive 3,500 dollars plus the install.135 horspower at the prop.Old engine is a 120 and thats at the back of the engine not at the prop.A drop in with very little modifications.Just have to ream out the hole in the transom a bit and drill 2 new holes.Wiring is simple he said.

Sounds like the way to go. And a great deal on the repower package, $3500.00 for an engine AND drive. Are you doing the repower yourself (save a bunch of cash) or jobbing it out?

I heard that when a little guy sues a business on a technical issue like service repairs, the little guy wins about 90% of the time....

However, i have seen many overheated engines in my career- never seen a block crack as a result of overheating. Not even aluminum blocks... I think there was a crack there already.

Your going to love the new setup so much you won't be pining over the old 120HP
