Re: Mercrisier one piece manifold
Howdy,
I'll guess that you're working on a V-6 Mercruiser. I cannot guess the year, model, serial etc......
It helps if you post that stuff!
What makes you think you're getting a "slight bit" of water into the oil?
Does anyone know why mercrusier discontinued one piece manifolds? I am have a slight amount of water getting in the oil, and I need to confirm the manifolds are not the problem.
The (infamous) Batwings........They were a terrible design. You don't know when they're going to start leaking and destroy your engine. OMC used them too....
If you operate in salt and your manifolds are about 5 years old or more, you should probably replace them anyway.
Leaking risers usually allow a small amount of water to drain back into an open exhaust valve. If you're running the engine the water gets blown out with the exhaust and will otherwise run ok.
If you shut it down for a long period of time, the water that does run into an open exhaust valve, will either cause a 'hydrolock" when you subsequently try to start it.......or if you wait long enough that little bit of water might leak past the rings and into the oil.
I had the same problem on my previous 460 OMC. It hydrolocked EVERY TIME I tried to start after shutdown (for 15-30 min) or so.It always started though.
If I let it sit for a couple of hours or all night, it would start right up. If I ran it during the day, all the water that got past the rings would evaporate out. (we're not talking about a LOT of water here)
If you're getting detectable water in the oil (white or gray oil) with NO hydrolock.......you most likely have cracked block or head (this is the time of year that this is most prevalent)
You should pressure check your block before you try to pressure check your manifolds (which is just about impossible...........about the only thing you can do with manifolds is pour them full of acetone and look for leaks)
Good luck.
Rick
