does anyone have any suggestions on how to block off one piece manifolds to check for leaks?

Does anyone know why mercrusier discontinued one piece manifolds? I am have a slight amount of water getting in the oil, and I need to confirm the manifolds are not the problem.

Howdy,

I'll guess that you're working on a V-6 Mercruiser. I cannot guess the year, model, serial etc......

It helps if you post that stuff!

What makes you think you're getting a "slight bit" of water into the oil?

The (infamous) Batwings........They were a terrible design. You don't know when they're going to start leaking and destroy your engine. OMC used them too....

If you operate in salt and your manifolds are about 5 years old or more, you should probably replace them anyway.

Leaking risers usually allow a small amount of water to drain back into an open exhaust valve. If you're running the engine the water gets blown out with the exhaust and will otherwise run ok.

If you shut it down for a long period of time, the water that does run into an open exhaust valve, will either cause a 'hydrolock" when you subsequently try to start it.......or if you wait long enough that little bit of water might leak past the rings and into the oil.

I had the same problem on my previous 460 OMC. It hydrolocked EVERY TIME I tried to start after shutdown (for 15-30 min) or so.It always started though.

If I let it sit for a couple of hours or all night, it would start right up. If I ran it during the day, all the water that got past the rings would evaporate out. (we're not talking about a LOT of water here)

If you're getting detectable water in the oil (white or gray oil) with NO hydrolock.......you most likely have cracked block or head (this is the time of year that this is most prevalent)

You should pressure check your block before you try to pressure check your manifolds (which is just about impossible...........about the only thing you can do with manifolds is pour them full of acetone and look for leaks)

Good luck.

Rick

Ayuh,... Because their JUNK...

If you've got 'em,.. Get Rid of 'em, 'n convert to regular 2 piece units...

I just did on my 4.3...

I think it cost me a motor also. I still haven't been able to find a crack in my old block.

99 4.3 . I have slight gray oil, new Jasper engine. no rise on dip stick, and oil looks good there until you drain it. steaming out of the oil fill hole. leading me to believe it is vaporizing as fast as it is leaking, therefore showing no rise in oil level on stick.
I have been told that the best way to check these strange manifolds is to crank up engine , bring up temp, shut down pull them and check the exhast ports on the manifold for mositure. I have already compression checked the engine, looks good, leading me to belive head gasket is ok.

Re: Mercrisier one piece manifold

as u know they ain't cheap and I have twin mercrusiers, so I am looking at 2 sets. Whew! Don't want to have to do it unless I am sure they are bad, and I am still a bit concerned where the problem is, I have a fresh rebuild Jasper engine I am trying to troubleshoot

did you find anyproblem with the manifolds? How did you check them for internal leaks

nope...I have a 11 year old set of manifolds...and a motor full of milky oilly pudding looking stuff...

I installed a Rapido Marine long block...had a minor oil leak, removed the valve cover and noticed a little bit of the dreaded milky oil in the top of the head...decided to bite the bullet and do the batwing to 2 pc manifold conversion.

haven't had much boat since, but I'm fairly certain the manifolds were the culprit.

especially after seeing the service bulletin and everyone on here telling to replace the manifolds.

how much did you have to spend for the manifolds? where did you get them? did the conversion go well or did you have any issues?

Re: Mercrisier one piece manifold

I was referred to this guy from a couple members here on iboats.
http://myworld.ebay.com/fredwarner1/

He's $500 lower in cost and the kit was complete. Other than my own mistake, the kit was very easy to install.

I think I paid $800 or so shipped. I didn't see the kit in his ebay store, but I bet he'd put something together if you send him a message.
