Mercontrol

I have a mercontro shifter / throttle on my 50hp Mercury engine I just bought. I figured out the shift, throttle, choke and key but in the front of the shifter there is a plug in with a slot. what is this plug for?

There is a pronged plug that goes into it. Which is connected to a wiring harness that goes to the tachometer on the dash
