MerControl Ignition Switch

I recently purchased a boat with a 1969 Mercury 650 outboard motor (serial number 2606205). The key in the ignition switch is broken off, but the stub is still operable. I would like to replace the switch before it becomes inoperable. Does anyone know for sure if I can replace my existing switch with this one: Mallory Switch, Ignition Mercury 9-15301 (http://www.iboats.com/Mallory-Switch-Ignition-Mercury-9-15301/dm/view_id.365854)? The live chat operator at iBoats was not sure.

If not, any alternatives or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

I would be concerned that the aftermarket ign switch may not fit inside the MerControl. Why not get a new key? Merc uses only about 1 dozen keys for all MerControls. Pull the stub out with tweezers and take it to a dealer for a new replacement key.

The previous owner said that he couldn't get the broken piece out. I haven'y tried for fear that if I succeed, I may not have a way to get the motor started. I want to explore my options before I start messing with it and go from bad to worse. :confused:

If you have the back half of the key, look for a code number on it. Take that number to the dealer. You can also use a dental pick (get them at any hardware store) and pull the key from the housing. Take it to the nearest key shop and have them cut one. See if it works. If so, then go back for half dozen more. Store in places that you will not remember (because that's how it usually works out anyway).

Perch;

At the link I gave you, just scroll down the page to item 49 and you will see this P/N, 54211T | SWITCH ASSY and over on the right side of the page is the price and you can buy it from Crowley. If you don't like their price, just Google the P/N and you will find several places that sell it.

That will be the switch for the box you have.

Thanks, Gerry and Silvertip! Now that I know I can replace the switch if I need to, I can try messing with the broken-off key. You guys were a great help.
