Weel i bought me a 1973 mercruiser 165hp inline 6cyl.this thing has ran one time out at the lake and thats it.it will idle all day but if u give it gas it will die.looks like the carb is loading up also with gas.i see some white smoke out the exhaust also.i have taken the carb off four times and cleaned it.new gaskets needle seat and acc pump.i checked the float does float in cup of water isnt adjusted wrong either.i put new points and cap and plugsin it.i cant see how its loading up if the float is ok needle is seating properly.i set the point gap at 16 but didnt adjust dwell.i figured that should be close enough to run.this thing falls on its face if you give it gas wont run.what the hell?do i put a new carb on it???please help.is the head blown??wouldnt it still rev somewhat??!! THE ONE DAY IT DID RUN IT STARTED GETTING WORSE OFF TAKE OFF.WOULD DIE,IF I FEATHERED THE CRAP OUT OF THE THROTTLE I COULD GET IT GOING AND SHE RAN GREAT.AS SOON AS I CAME TO A STOP THATS IT .GO TO TAKE OFF AGAIN AND YOUR DONE.EVENTUALLY FEATHERING THE GAS DIDNT WORK ANYMORE I IDLED BACK TO THE DOCK AND STARTED REPLACING STUFF.DID I BLOW THE HEAD OUT THERE OR CARB JUST GO.also when it did i pulled a middle plug and air blew out with enginr off!does this confirm blown head or is it hydro locking from exsessive fuel creating this?

Nice work on buying a 38 year old engine. I assume that you did not give it much of a test drive (?) or perhaps something has changed in the one trip out on the lake.

Based on what you described, here are the things that I would check.

- set the dwell
- engine timing
- compression test

Did you use a soak type cleaner and compressed air to clean the carb? If you just sprayed it out or off you didn't clean it. There are all kinds of tiny passages that need to be checked.
My guess is it still needs some help in the accelerator pump circuit.

i used carb cleaner to spray it out.imade sure the passsage from acc pump to tpin hole was clear which it is.i know most carb problems are from blokkage but i am seeing alot of gas in carb when it dies and cant give it gas, even drips.i just think its loading up but i dont know why.also the smoking out exhaust has me scared head gasket but compression was 110 -100 on all 6

somy dwell was 55 should be 30-35 that means i need a bigger gap so the 16 thousands really means nothing that they say it should be?the thing is it did this before i touched the points and its smoking out exhaust and looks like carb is loading up

Ayuh,.... It's worn out.... You have nothin' but a rebuildable core motor....

Ayuh,... Good compression is 150psi, 'n up....

At 100psi, it's had it...

1973 may be on the border of it having the old non hardened exhaust valve seats. A valve & seat job may bring the compression back to normal. Do a cylinder leakdown and hopefully it is just leaky valves.

Blowback into the intake manifold from just a few valves leaking will cause pooling in the carb. It did on mine anyways. Is your mechanical fuel pump producing too much pressure for the float to handle? Aftermarket pumps can do this.

Oh and in my opinion, if you block and manifold are not cracked, this engine is well worth rebuilding. Good ones with good blocks are now harder to find without buying an entire scrap boat. I have a good spare but block is cracked. I am going to run it anyways and just patch it.

what else would blow out the hole when the spark plug is removed? actually air is hard to see, because it is invisible.

well im an auto mechanic and ive probably done 2000 tune ups on vehicles that were completely warmed up and just turned off and not once have i removed a spark plug while doing a tune up and heard and felt air blow out like i just relieved pressure in the cylinder.thats why i asked the question has anyone seen that.im assuming you have and its normal????????

I have the same Engine, OD combo in my boat. Had a somewhat similar problem, it would start, idle & run ok but after about a minute or two at speed it died. Turns out the problem was a small piece of debris in the fuel line (I have a 90 degree elbow where the line comes out of the fuel tank, forming a sort of pocket. a piece of junk was caught there.) It drove me crazy till I found it.
