Merc water pump

This may be a dumb question but don't have much experience with sterndrives.

Have a 1996 4.3 Merc LX Gen+ with Alpha One drive.

When I have the muffs on with the hose running - where should water be coming out of? Unlike my previous outboard I don't see water "pissing" out in a stream anywhere?

I only let boat run about five minutes - temp guage did not move. Does it have to come up to temp before it starts circulating water?

How can I tell if impeller and water pump are working as they should?

I/O's don't have teltales like outboards. All you can do is watch the temp gauge.
Water will come out of the prop and 2 idle relief ports at the base of the transom shield.
