I am rebulding my 1990 115 merc after an over heat last summer. After pricing out pistons from dealer at $230 a pop, I am looking at after market options. Heres the kicker, according to factory manual, I don't have to rebore all cylinders if only 1 needs it because merc pistons for this engine come weighted the same even if over sized. Any one have any idea if this is also the case if I buy after market pistons?

PS anyone heard of carborundum cloth? The manual suggests using it to clean up connectin rod pin hole, but I can't find it anywhere. I suspect its called something else to us lay people.
thanks, h2o

Wiseco pistons can be mixed also. Boring will depend on cylinder dimensions from taper and out-of-round. Most likely a 12 year old motor that's been hot enough to stick a piston will need to be bored anyway. Once you get it apart your machine shop can measure it with a dial bore gauge and tell you what needs to be bored right away.

Good luck!

LOL danged shop manuals and thier greekanese!!
Carborundum cloth is "emery cloth",available at all parts shops, machinasts, and some hardware stores. I think you are familliar with it, but if not, it comes in sheets (like sandpaper),rolls (like adhesive tape), and some special "belts" for machine-specific applications.
Maybe they call it carborundum cloth in another part of the country, but down here in swampville, it's emmory cloth.

Re: MERC PISTONS

12ftr, congrags on the 2k posts, sounds like you've been a big help to many. I am new to this board, but have already learned a lot reading through the different posts.
I kind of thought it was emery cloth (we call it that too here in da nort' woods), but the manual made a distinction between the two. Can't for the life of me figure it out. Maybe merc is just trying to mess with my head... not that that is any great feat.
