Hello

With buying a boat for the first time and not really knowing a lot
about boat mechanics, I figured I would join this site.

Anyways.. I bought a 1990 Campion 185 with a 4.3 merc and Alpha one merc leg.

We took the boat out for a test drive before I bought it and everything
seemed to be in good working order. After we re-trailered the boat we went to raise the leg
but it will only go up about half way then start clicking. Its in trailer mode but wont go up
more then half. The weird thing is the trim meter on the dash says its up all the way.

It was definitely fully raised before we launched it so I don't know what happened between the 30 min boat ride.

Anyone know what I should start looking for to fix this problem?

I bought the boat anyways and the seller knocked a couple hundred bucks off the
price but now how do I fix it? Any ideas?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... What Vintage is it,..??

I'd guessin' the wirin' for the trim system has some Corrosion goin' on, usually it's at the wirin' Ends/ connections...

Takin' 'em apart, cleanin' to shiny metal, reinstallin', 'n Greasin' 'em will usually fix it...

Yes , it will go all the way back down, then up, but gets stuck again at the halfway point with clicking.
To get it home, I used a drop down hitch to give the prop a bit more road clearance ... but probably best
not to leave it like that. lol plus the truck sits pretty low to the ground as it is

If something happens like that again, just remove the trim cylinders from the back of the drive and raise the drive by hand and tie it up with some dock lines.

Go to the trim pump. On the up solenoid (Blue/white wires) jumper between the two large terminals and see if the drive goes up.

That got er! Sorry for the late reply. The boat is currently in a shop about 2 hours drive from where I live
so it makes it hard to look at things right away.
I took the solenoid off and hope to replace it at a marine shop this week. When we jumped it,
it hesitated a bit but then went real smooth after. I'm hoping its just that the hydro fluid is a bit low and the pump isn't dying.

Your power package has 3 serial numbers. You will need those for parts and the like. Best find them and record them before the boat's hours drive away and you need them.

The format of the numbers are, a '0' followed by a letter, then 6 digits. You'll find one on the engine, just above the starter motor. One on the drive, on or under the decal on the port side. And one on the top of the gimbal housing, on the decal.

When you next post a question here, if it's an engine question, also post the engine serial number. If it's a drive question, post the drive serial number. Also with those numbers I can post you a link to the proper service manuals.
