Merc Controls

In need of some help. I recently upgraded my toon boat from a 1979 9.9 with side mount remote dash controls. To a 1993 25hp electric start with tiller. I purchased the kit to convert the tiller handle to remote cables. I was going to use the old control box but finding the throttle position is messed up. The shift cable operates as it should. What I am up against is the throttle position when the shift handle is in neutral the linkage is in wide open throttle. When moving control to forward or reverse it puts the throttle lever into neutral / idle. I have tried adjusting barrel position. I have tried switching cables around with NO luck. Do I need a newer control box ? Or do I have the wrong cable conversion kit installed ?? Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers.

I had a 1977 Merc IL6 motor, and when that went bad, put a 1993 Merc V6 motor on the boat, using the same controls. No issues at all.

I have never worked on your motor but would have expected the old control to work. Mercs usually push the throttle closed when the throttle handle is in neutral. Johnson/evinrude do the opposite. So if you swapped out a Johnnyrude for a Merc, the throttle would not work properly.

Thanks for the reply. So I was told that the old controls wouldn't work from 1979 to 1993. Soooo I purchased 300$ new control box. Same fricken issue. Man this is super frustrating.

the controls on the 9.8 that you had were a 9.8E only option used on pontoon boats. basically mercontrol lite.... no frills, just 4 wires back to the motor. it took me over a year to find one for the hellion because I was running a 9.8E power head on the hellion. there are 2 starter wires and the 2 kill switch wires. no choke, tach, etc.

your 25hp should use the standard outboard controls
