hi.

1990 merc 90hp tripple.

when i try my tilt or trim, all i get is the motor running, i can hear it running, but nothing moves.

i was told that this may be" o-rings and seals"

if i were to replace these rings and seals, is this something i could do myself. and if i do it myself, should i remove the tilt/trim assembly from the motor and work on it in the garage or leave it on the motor.

this is my first outboard with trim/ tilt

any advice is welcomed

Re: merc 90 tilt / trim questions

They had a run of single-ram trim and tilt units that failed at a very high rate. I'm not sure if yours is one. One of the more common failures was inside. There was a lever that broke the pivot leaving the unit inoperable in one or both directions. You can't get parts anymore so on one I replaced the tiny roll pin with a short piece of nail. As far as I know it's still working. You would have to take the trim motor off the pump to access this. But first, check your fluid with the motor tilted fully up. To get there, you might have to release the Manual valve and tilt it the hard way and set the tilt lever.

If you go the o-ring route, it's easier to remove the unit from the motor. But I don't think that's the problem. However if I go so far as to remove the unit, I do the o-rings. You'll need a manual for that. It's a very messy job. The lever repair only requires removing the pump motor and you only have to remove the top ram pin to get at it if it's a single ram unit.

Willy, could you please explain me exactly where is this pivot? Mine on a 1993 60hp ELPTO single ram had this problem (goes up but not down, trim motor running fine), even after cleaning the brushes and changing all the o-rings.

Could you please point it to me on this
