Merc 9.9 Stuck in Reverse

Help! I was trying to start my merc. 9.9 longshaft 2-stroke yesterday, and noticed the shift into reverse felt unusually stiff (engine was not running at the time). I forced it, and it clicked in, but I can't pull it out of reverse at this point. Before I take a pair of pliers to the shifter, would there be any reason for this stiffness? The engine has never had a problem shifting, and I'm not sure if forcing it might damage something else.
Thanks,
Pelufo

Re: Merc 9.9 Stuck in Reverse

To clarify, this engine was not running at the time?
Have you tried it with the engine running?
Most outboards must be running to shift properly. If the driveshaft isn't turning, they will tend to "lock up".
Also, if the gearcase is dry,or has water in it, it will be hard to shift, even whaen running) at times.
Check the lube in the lower unit for water contamination.

I can't get it back into neutral, so I can't start it.
