merc 700 drive shaft! advice?

hello to all! I am waiting on my new manual,carb kit pump kit and fuel pump kit![I do have manual,but for 2 yrs later]my question is-this motor has been laying on its side for 4 yrs,I got her running but not good.Then overheated,I have gotten to the pump off the l-u, I am seeing rust,I am sanding to get it as smooth as possible,you all say not to use grease that water will not penetrate, any suggestions when I put it back together? will be in touch parts will be here monday!!! thank you!! johnny v! :)

Don't use grease. Oil is ok,as is assembly lube, but dont grease it.<br />Rust is normal on the shaft. Be only concerned with rust or pitting under the portion where the seal rides.<br />Pressue test the lower unit before putting it back on, to make sure it is sealing . Look for 5-10PSI in a barrel,or garbage can of water,(l/U submerged). There should be no bubbles.
