Hi, sounds like a thermostat problem, once you get it out put in a pot of boiling water and see if it actuates if it doesn't replace it. Hope this helps.

Mike :)

could the cause of the problem be that the motor doesnt have a thermostat and it is supose to?

Re: merc 60 1989 over heating problems

I don't know, it's probably either stuck or rusted shut. I had the same problem on my 50 Johnson, I replaced the impeller and it still kept overheating,
I didn't know it had one at the time either. If its supposed to have one and its been removed it probably wouldn't overheat because the water would be circulating continuosly. Hope that helps.

Mike :)

it is still overheating a bit though and is this because there is carbon deposits in the cambers? fishmonger.33

Re: merc 60 1989 over heating problems

What makes you say its overheating a bit, is the horn going off or have you got a temp gauge. Is it a 2 or 4 stroke, if its a 2 stroke and the oil/gas mix was to lean it might cause it to run hot, running it at an idle can also increase the temp, the impeller pumps more water at higher rpm's. I think carbon deposits would probably just make it run rough. Hope that helps a little.

Mike :)

Re: merc 60 1989 over heating problems

the water pump is a presurized system and is is always pumping ample water. the oil/gas mix is ok we usualy dont run at idle to much but the alarm goes off is the motor is running at full out, amd it doesnt matter how much you lower the pitch on the prop we tryed 15, 14, 13 and it wuold still overheat
it is a 2 stoke and it has the auto oil injection and you put staight gas in the tank. thanks. fishmonger.33

Hi, fishmonger, I can't think of anything else that would cause it to overheat, you might post this on the Merc site not thatthere should be that much difference, a motor's a motor right.

Mike :)
