Hi all
I have a 50hp Merc Blue Band ser#3482234. I looked it up on John's Old Merc site and it stated that it came in non charging and charging circuit. Since it is elec start, I assume their is an alternator/generator. How do I determine?
16' Safetmate/50hp Merc 1976 22' Grady White

A lot of the old Mercs from that era had point type distributers which were a basic magneto which does not need voltage to operate. The battery was for starting only..

Easiest way to determine if your motor has a charging system is to put a voltmeter across your battery and see if the voltage increases while the engine is running.

Hi!
Sounds like you have a similar engine to mine. There should be a rectifier on the port side attached to the front supporting frame near the top. Looks like four layers of rectangular sliced cheese.

crem1

Check your control lever box for the tach connection (a 3 pin plug), just under the key. Is it there, are wires connected to it?
