Hi,

I have a 80-81 (not sure on the year) merc 470, 170 hp. The boat is an '86 Four Winns Horizon 190. I installed the low mount alternator conversion kit from breezeworks (with power steering) this spring. The kit works great, charging my dual battery setup nicely, however there is a noticeable increase in engine vibration compared to last year and I'm thinking it is because of the new alternator and brackets. I followed the installation directions for the kit to a T. I'm wondering if I just need to double check the torque measurements on all the bolts, or if the belt isn't quite tight enough, or is too loose. The belt is taught, but not super tight. If you push on the longest span of the belt it moves in about 1/4 inch. Has anyone had similar issues with engine vibration after installing the breezeworks alternator kit? Or maybe just vibration problems with the 470 in general? I also made a small adjustment to the timing to 4 degrees BTDC, which is the spec, and tweaked the idle speed to around 550-600 rpms at idle. The vibration is most noticeable from 1500-2500 rpm. Thanks!

Re: Merc 470 Engine Vibration

if you installed the additional pully for the conversion you were supposed to center the pully with an indicator vs just bolting it on .

The alternator has a pulley on it, but I assumed the kit was built so everything would be aligned when you install it. It certainly looks aligned with the other pulleys.
