looking for some advice on a common problem that I have seen posted around the 170/470 engine. Attached to the timing cover is the cam seals, currently we have coolant leaking from the weep hole at the bottom of the timing cover.

I have attached some photos of the groove that has formed around the cam shaft ( as far as I can tell, these grooves are caused by the seals)

The camshaft doesn’t look too damaged. Will use emery cloth as advised in other posts to smooth out the surface. See pictures attached

I have a few questions/ thoughts that I would appreciate any advice on

1. Is speedi-sleeves still the best recommendation? If so, do I stick with the same sleeve that other people are using or do I really need to measure the cam shaft?
2. Do I need to emery cloth it smooth if I use the sleeve method?
3. The seals look CLEAN which is confusing. They’re likely worn down the slightest amount. Is it recommended to still replace the seal IF the sleeve method is used? I would assume if the seal is slightly worn, the sleeve would be thick enough to close the gap
4. What replacement seals are recommended? Everything I find online shows pictures that look completely different than what I have installed currently.
5. I read a service note on changing the seals and the mention a press to get the new seals in place, but suggest to support the timing cover since it may crack. Does anyone have experience replacing the seals? Is it easy enough to do by hand or will a tool be needed?

That shaft is badly pitted, I'd sleeve it, put new seals in the cover and button it up. I haven't looked but I suspect the new seal is a double seal, not 2 singles.

Chris....

Edit: Can confirm, new seal is a double.

If you're going through the trouble, there is zero reason not to replace the seal as well. Do you really want to do the job again if the seal was bad?

I agree with the others, looking at those photos, I'd use the speedi sleeves and new seals. You can remove/replace the seals in the cover by hand, but support the backside of the cover where the seals are so added pressure isn't on the rim/edge of the cover.
