Hi there, I was wondering if someone could help me please?

I have what I believe is a 40 hp (late 80's?) 4 cylinder 2 stroke (oil tank for auto mixing) Merc.
The shift shaft has broken at the base and was wondering if anyone has any hints or tips for removal and replacement please?
I have removed the lower part (gearbox) and have what can now only be described as a "shrapnel" piece of the shaft.
The rest of the shaft is obviously still in place and it would appear that the shaft can only come out upwards.
Is this the case?
All help appreciated, many thanks in advance,
spangler.

Re: Merc 40hp late 80's?

First have the replacement shaft in hand next drain the unit then. With the unit in a vise to keep it level, remove the shift shaft retainer that's the sloted thing the shaft goes through, use care not to pull the shaft up at this point (use a screwdriver to hold it down while lifting the shaft retainer up) switch the retainer clip to the new shaft and carefully install it. If you don't use care in remoing and installing the shaft or bump the unit around the shift cam may move and the new shaft won't line up with the splined hole.
