hi all, I have just changed a shift shaft on the above mentioned engine and I am now trying to replace the lower unit/gearbox.
I seem to get it almost back into position except for the last 1.5/2.0 inches.
Has anyone any tips or advice please?

Many thanks,
Spangler.

Re: Merc 40hp gearbox/lower unit

Have a helper slowly rotate the flywheel clockwise as you push up on the LU. The splined shaft needs to engage in the crankshaft.

Other hangups I've encountered are

1) water tub misaligned and not engaging into the waterpump
2) exhaust tube is a friction fit into a rubber gasket in the LU. Apply a little vaseline to both the exhaust tube and the rubber gasket.
3) shift shaft splined linkage out of alignment. Make sure both the LU and the control are in the same gear.
