Hi everyone,
Am installing my lower unit and my Clymer manual keeps referencing a 40 / 402. Some settings are critical depending on which. My wrap-around cowl has a 402 on the back, but the smaller cowl arounc the drive-case says 40hp. Am not sure which I do have. Help anybody? Thanx!!!!

The 402 is a 40 hp. The "2" in 402 meant 2-cylinder.

Thanks djohns,

My initial guess was your explanation. But my manual is confusing because it will give spec's for both a "40" and a "402" like they are different.... Thanx again.

DMZ.

The Clymer manual, right DMZ? If so, I hope you don't have carb problems MAN that manual stinkz on the carb blowups.

The 402 is the older model number the 40 is the newer model number. Example, In the 1970's it was a Merc 1150, in the 80's it was a Merc 115. Same basic motor. Go with the number on the top cowling.
