I dusted off our boat after life kept me from using it for a couple years and the kicker motor (1977 4.5 merc) is not running. I just rebuilt the carb and spark plug and fresh gas. I can get it started and it'll sputter and cough for 30 seconds and then die. If i give it gas it dies immediately - like its flooding out. I've gotten it to idle for around 1 minute with a lot of coaxing, but it continues to cough, sputter, some backfires and dies... UGH HELP
It acted the exact same way before i rebuilt the carb - I thought for sure it was the old gas gumming up the carb, but the carb actually looked great. I'm now thinking that it may be the timing? Points?
I could really use some help... any experts out there? I can't really afford a boat shop. Thanks in advance!
