Hey guys, I have a 1993 mercury 135 that has been giving me problems with engaging the starter. Looked around and found that a set of wires coming off my lower regulator were getting hot enough to melt the rubber boots arond them. I cleaned them up and reattached and started right up. Went out for a cruise and the voltage is running 17 to 18 at about 4000 rpm it goes down a little bit at lower rpm but not much.I guess my question is- 1. Is it the rugulator has gone bad and thats why its charging so high causing it to melt the connections, or is there something else I need to check. Its only on the wires coming off of the lower reg. the top one seems fine . Do i need to replace them both. Also the temp runs about 160 to 170 at 4000 as well which I assume is pretty norm and not contributing to the prob. Thanks for all the help, this has been driving me nuts trying to get some fishing in but scared ill be left stranded in the gulf.

Those are all good questions. Why not look on the CDI Electronics web page and see if a definitive test exists? The Stator should have Ohm tests if nothing else.

It was easy to id my regulators as bad. They had burn marks on them.
