The day before Thanksgiving Day we had to put Desi, our 13 year old lab mix down. It was very sad for both of us. He's been a precious part of the family all these years. The house was so empty without him, as were our hearts.

We knew given time, we would have another dog and had decided that another lab was what we wanted since we loved their personalities.

On Thanksgiving our daughter who was spending the holiday with her inlaws called to tell us that her BIL had a 2 1/2 year old chocolate lab they had chained up in the garage because their baby was crawling around now and the dog was just too big to bring in the house. When I heard that, I didn't care what he looked like, I told her we would take him.

We picked up Samson (Sam) Saturday night around 6 p.m. He's beautiful inside and out. He has papers, been neutered and is a very healthy and sweet dog. He immediately bonded with both of us.

We took him yesterday to our friends who have 2 hunting dogs, one Springer and a black labs and our friend told us to let Sam inside the gate and let them play. Not knowing how Sam would react to other dogs I was a bit nervous. We let them all together, they all sniffed butts and the next thing you know they were running around in a pack all playing together.

I feel like we hit the doggy lotto. Sam is the best behaved dog I've ever seen. Nothing riles him, not even cats. We've yet to hear him bark. He just wants to play and love. He dosent chew, dig, jump, bark, and he gets along with other animals, loves to ride in the car, dosen't mess in the house. We are really fortunate to have him.

He already has a spot on the floor at the foot of our bed where he sleeps at night. I think he is just grateful to be free and getting so much attention.

Good looking dog. Chained in the garage just sounds bad. Glad the owners were smart enough to give him to people who will love and care for him.

Re: Meet SAM!!!

Awesome LF. We've had three labs. All just want to love and play. We did get one puppy at 5 months who we thought was perfect, he still is, but he only showed us his mischievous side after giving us about three days of total peace. I think he just wanted to make sure we wouldn't throw him out before we had a chance to fall in love with him . . .

Congrats LF's. Hard to beat the personality of those labs. He looks like a real keeper. A real big lover. :)

Re: Meet SAM!!!

Sorry to hear of your loss LF, i'm sure that Desi was a wonderful member of your household.
Our pets do have a way of occupying a very special place in our hearts, therefore you will miss him dearly and will continue to do so, but as time goes by with Sam around, the certain similarities in his manner of behaviour will bring you lots of joy and the occasional tear as you reminisce.
Good luck with Sam, he is an absolulely beautiful dog, and i am certain he will be a fine and up-standing fellow who will put Mr LF in his place from time to time ;)

Re: Meet SAM!!!

It seems that Sam will jump the fence to follow us when we leave. :(

This is not good. I've looked into e-collars and electric fences, etc. Not sure what we are going to do just yet.

I've been taking him to the beach and walking him everyday trying to wear his butt out.

Well, yesterdays trip to the beach was really great. I finally get the courage to let him lose without the leash since it was just him and me on the beach. He did great. Actually he was more worried about where I was at first. Then he took off spinning in circles, jumping and acting like a pup lolololol, chasing seagulls and having a blast. I call to him and he came right back to me on a dead run. He stopped right next to me and sat down for me to put his leash back on him. You can't ask for better than that.

Then after we got home, I thought I would run a little test. So I started walking up the driveway to the street (our street is a dead end so there's not any traffic) to see if he would jump the fence. Sure enough the second I was out of site he jumped it and came after me on a dead run. I yelled NO, BAD BOY, yanked his collar and took him back to the house inside the gate.

I thought okay, you little stinker lets try this again. So I got in the SUV and backed out of the driveway and sat down at the end of the culdesac and waited. Sure enough, here he comes runnin. I yelled at him when we got back to the house, put him inside the gate and made him stay outside the rest of the day. He pouted.

This morning Mr. LF left for work and Sam was in the house. He went nuts trying to get out so he could chase Rod down. This is a HUGE problem.

But he is cute when he pouts, I think its the first time I've seen his face without his tongue hangin out.......
Re: Meet SAM!!!

I think in Sams mind that he is afraid the he is going to loose another family that is why he chases after you and Mr. F.

Re: Meet SAM!!!

A story worth telling, LF and congratulations.
Sam looks great - alert, healthy and happy.

Seeing him, however, reminds me of "Bailey", a 2 1/2 year old Female Chocolate Lab that was stolen from me last April. In the small fishing village where I live, she was friends with everyone and went everywhere with me. I mourned her loss, but so did the town.

So, I wish you all the joy that I know a Lab can bring into your life.
