Hello,
I m on the way to rehab the waterpump and have 2 questions
1/ after a lot of difficulties i finally succeed to pull off the flywheel ( i had to manufacture the appropiate tool). How can i use to fit it back ? I m also plnning to replace the whole alternator by a kit. The old one was not working anymore.
I discovered that one of the magnet was missing (it actually broke and found some pieces every where in this part of the engine)
How can i remove the 3 remaining magnets
Thanks for your help

Re: MCM 470 waterpump reseal

I borrowed a puller/installer from autozone, but because the rotor is so deep I had to make a spacer to install it. What you can do is get a long 1/2 inch fine thread bolt, and a nut and stack of washers. Run the nut all the way up the bolt and put the washers or or a short piece of pipe + washers on it, then screw the bolt all the way into the crank. Turn the nut on the bolt against the washers (grease them up a little) to push the rotor back on, and hold the bolt with a wrench to keep the crank from turning or the bolt from jamming in the crank. Here is the manual with a photo of the Merc tool, you can see how it works. Do not try to pound the rotor on. Not sure how to remove the magnets, but a couple of guys here have done it, maybe one will say how. Good luck.

Stonyloam is right on with install. Just use a bolt and washers to get the clearance. You will need to pull washers and tighten again and pull washers and tighten again. I think it took me a couple times of removing washers to get it on all the way. FYI, Autozone has a free tool rental and their puller works just fine.

Generally you can smack the magnets with a hammer and they will pop right off. I used pliers and popped them off.

I only hope you used something to protect the crankshafts threads.

Dang! Never put in the link:facepalm: http://boatinfo.no/lib/mercruiser/manuals/mercruiser8.html#/152

Dr. With the bolt turned all the way in you are not turning the bolt against the threads, so they will not be damaged. The nut on the bolt pushes against the bolt threads and the bolt is held stationary with a wrench on the end. Similar to how the Merc tool works.

All,
Many thanks for your replies.
Prior to push back the flywheel, I will have to safely remove the timing chain cover without damaging the cork seal of the oil pan. Any tips to do that ?
I also encounter some difficulties to pull the flywheeel key from the crankshaft. Any tip ?

Thanks for your support

Good luck... I spent hours slowly cutting the gasket to separate it only for it to tear anyways. Clean the surface well and bought a new oil pan gasket. ( I actually had a complete engine gasket set), and cut the part I needed from the new gasket and pieced it. Used blue silicone I think especially in the corners and not a drop out of it.

The Key can stay in the crank slot. (I'm pretty sure)

Like Erik says you can make a new piece of gasket, just find some similar material the right thickness and trace the old part and cut out with an xacto knife. I would not buy the whole gasket just for the front piece. Yeah don't remember about the key, but if the new crank oil seal goes on over it OK then no need to remove it. Remember the garter springs on both cam seals face forward (away from the block) and the garter spring on the crank oil seal faces the block (easy to forget which way they go). Good luck.
