Re: MC1 Rebuild Info Needed

Thanks BoatGuy,
I agree with your observation. I've been seriously trying to educate myself on boat restorations, and I'm hoping I don't find a bunch of saw dust in the transom when I get access. If I do it's going to add a lot of time. I'm pretty confident I can do the repairs (if needed). Just hoping it's not necessary... either way, I knew this was going to be a project, and I've always been up for a challenge. The way I'm looking at it, regardless of the labor, and time, this is something I'll be very proud of when I get her done.

Thanks everyone for the advice and patience.

More to follow.

Re: MC1 Rebuild Info Needed

Hi Guy's,

Sorry it's been a while since my last post. The holidays were super busy, and then I found myself back on duty here at the air ambulance base. So, here's an update on where I'm at with the SeaRay... I made the decision to replace the gimbal housing units. MC-1's to Alpha One Gen 1 units. I found a pair on ebay, and have both in the garage right now. One is in really good condition, and the other is in good condition albeit, I'm going to completely strip it down to correct a loose upper pin, and repaint it. The last week I was off I managed to get one of the engines out (in between winter storms that were coming through SoCal). I'll be off again this coming Tuesday (for a week) and will continue with the second engine and inner transom plates. I'll know more about how much work / modification's will have to be done then. From what I could see of the transom with the first engine out, it looked pretty good, and I;m hoping I don't have a big transom repair in the immediate future. I made the decision to document the restoration on "Youtube" so if anyone is interested in keeping up with the progress you can find the videos at:

Sundancer 260 Restoration Project - YouTube

That's about it for right now... Thanks again for everyones help and advice so far.

Back soon...

Re: MC1 Rebuild Info Needed

Hey Randy,

I can see potential for a whole mess of problems... The first being the inner transom plate/flywheel cover. Do the engines have their original flywheel covers (mounting hole spacing 10") which will fit the new style Alpha inner plate), or have they got older ones to fit the old style inner plate (about 14")?

Re: MC1 Rebuild Info Needed

Hi Chris,

I'll be coming off duty tomorrow morning, and heading back. Good point, and appreciate the heads up. My plan was to start doing a complete demensional analysis of the components this week. I've got the one engine out, and will be taking a LOT of video and photos of the Stbd engine (before I actually pull it). With the Port engine out I have enough room to really crawl around the check things out. Stay tuned... I'lll post what I find here and on the youtube channel. I knew there would be problems to solve... Thanks for helping to keep me tracking right. :>)

Hi Randy,

How are you making out on this project. I found your post in my search for an almost identical question. Not sure if I should start a new thread or just tag along on this one? Maybe the moderators can help out.

I have a 1980 19' Sunrunner that was mostly free to me..the hull is excellent, all redone and nicely finished, but the power and drive are a mess. The engine is missing so I'm looking for a 305 or 350, or even a 4.3L. The drive is there and is an MC1 like yours, just prior to Alpha but there are some issues which is why I am here..to decide whether to rebuild this or go Alpha 1 replacement. I have almost everything from the engine back, flywheel cover, inner transom plate, gimbal ring and the drive. The gimbal housing is missing though. Also, the lower unit gears are toast, teeth missing off F/R and damaged pinion. Upper unit looks fine. Gimbal ring is missing all the pins, top/bottom and left/right. Trim sender missing etc. Rams are there though.

Anyway, I will try to find a lower unit or a whole stern drive and the various missing pieces. I have learned a lot from this post which I understand is that if I find a complete Alpha inner transom plate and flywheel cover, exhaust T and gimbal housing, I can mount that with only a few holes needing filling in the transom and some minor shift cable, steering connection changes required and use my original drive, or, I find the MC1 gimbal housing and either Alpha 1 or MC1 lower unit. Right? My drive has 1.5 gears and is labeled 228. S/N 5723747

Thanks guys,

PS let me know if this requires a new thread and i will re-post separately.

Welcome to iboats Paul, best to start a new thread of your own when you have a question, they your questions don't get lost at the end of the original posters question, plus everyone is reading your thread, not someone elses.

Thanks Don,

That is sort of what I thought. Will start a separate thread.

Cheers
