Well, I think we may have an issue.

Ayuh,..... You Do,..... The exhausted water should be Pourin' outa the bottom of the transom housin', 'n prop,.....

In the boat, start pullin' hoses to see where the raw water is flowin', 'n where it ain't flowin',.....

Kinda thought so. Thanks Bondo.

So, if the diagrams are correct, I believe I disconnected the raw water "exit" and inlet hoses on the HX (see pics). I believe that is direct connection between the sterndrive and the HX? If it is, no water came out of the hose connected to the HX while running the engine. Any thoughts on what it might be? What is there between the sterndrive and HX...Or am I doing something wrong?inlet.jpgexit.jpg

I'm kinda at a loss. What is there between the impeller and the "plumbing" to the HX? The fins in the impeller are in the same direction as the old one, the key is in the shaft to lock the impeller, the tube is in place and seems to have when in fine when I joined the upper and lower housings. Could there be a blockage at the VR? From what I can see online it appears as if it is nothing more than a copper tube attached to a heatsink.

Well, I think we may have an issue. I placed the thermo cap on and started the engine. Now I know I shouldn't run it w/ the prop going, but I noticed no water coming out from anywhere on the sterndrive other than the muffs. I tried it in neutral and forward and didn't notice anything. My wife took a vid while it was engaged and nothing...Like I said, either in neutral or forward. When I shut it off at 175 degrees, steam started coming out from 2 holes in the sterndrive...so my question is...is water supposed to be coming from them when running? See the pics of what I'm talking about. Thanks again...

Steam...
Yep you should at least see water pouring out of the idle relief ports like in my vid. That’s how I tell if my impeller is good, if I see that healthy stream there I know it’ll be good for the season.

The water cooled voltage regulator is behind the heat exchanger and the first thing seawater sees from the drive. It is a straight piece of 1/2" copper pipe attached to the back of the voltage regulator, that could catch impeller pieces. There is also a 90° bend fitting on the water line where it passes through the transom which could also catch something.

I would pull the drive off again, and back flush the water hose into the hose that feeds the heat exchanger so it blows back out the boat and see what the flow looks like at the water inlet in the bellhousing. You could also run the engine with the drive off, by sticking a hose in the water inlet of the bellhousing. Water will exit the lower opening where the shift shaft is in the middle of. I have a photo attached of the water inlet opening with large O'ring, where water will exit if you backflush the hose from the heat exchanger back out.... and you could stick a garden hose into to feed the engine while running with the drive off.

I would pull the lower unit down and make sure the gaskets are mounted on the water pump housing correctly. Are you sure the copper pipe is in the water pump guide tube?

Well, alrighty then...Looks as if I'm gonna get a "crash course" in sterndrive mechanics. One video I watched made mention of a gimbal tool when reinstalling...Is there anything special I should know prior to this procedure? Once again, I thank you for the direction Eric.

Yeah, everything was installed properly including the copper pipe and guide tube. I followed Chris' video to the T. Although working on boats is new to me, I'm fairly certain that it's something else. Thanks Kenny.

I was able to get a few back when we could. ;)
This is my manuals list. ;-)

As for the water flow, you are correct, it's just a pipe from the water pump to the HX. First thing I would do, pull the drive, stick a hose into the water inlet in the bell housing and see you have water flowing freely out of the exhaust reliefs and the exhaust cavity in the bell housing (engine does not need to be running for this). If you do, that means the problem is in the drive. If not, you have a restriction between the bell housing and the outlet of the HX, so remove the HX inlet hose and see if you have water... Divide and conquer.

If it's the drive, I would split the drive and check the water pocket cover (pressure test it. I did a long post on this many years ago, before the change to xenforo, and the link no longer works, and the search doesn't go back past 2018 🤦) I suspect as the impeller was so bad the WPC is leaking like the houses of parliament.

I replaced my impellor last year and it was destroyed in a few minutes running on the muffs. Sometimes you just get a bad impellor. Granted I used a generic one. I replaced it with a Mercuiser and all was fine. I would recheck and make sure it is still good.

Thanks Chris, yeah I'm gonna crack it open again. I'm sure it's the pocket cover. I'm kicking myself right now for not inspecting that...ugh. By the way, the Alpha-1 pocket covers...will they work on the MC-1 by any chance?

Yep, figured I might as well inspect while I have it open. Gracias.

When you installed the new impeller did you rotate the drive shaft clockwise while pushing the top cover over the impeller? I ask as I did it counter clockwise on the first boat I bought years ago and it would start to to run hot after about 5 min on muffs in the driveway.

Did it just as Chris describes in his video. Results in the same direction.

Are you using Quicksilver muffs? If not, try them first or as somebody else suggested, run the boat in the lake. With those rectangular muffs, my boat ran hot in the driveway. The Quicksilver muffs are expensive but the boat ran at normal temp indefinitely with them.

What condition was your water pocket when you had the drive apart?
