Maxum electrical issues

I recently purchased a 1999 Maxum 2100 SC and a number of electrical items don't work: the tachometer, speedometer, temperature gauge, navigation lights, and stereo don't function. It seems to be related to no power at the fuse box. Is there a relay or other fuse block located between the under dash panel and the battery? I haven't been able to find a service manual or electrical schematic for this boat. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out.

Re: Maxum electrical issues

Welcome to iboats!:welcome:

Unless someone messed with the original wiring scheme, you have three separate issues:

1. There should be a main fuse or circuit breaker on the positive feed for the fuse block. This should be within 6" to 12" of the battery. The nav lights and stereo should be fed by the fuse block.

2. The tachometer and temperature gauge get power from the ignition switch, which connects through the engine's electrical harness, not the fuse block. If the engine starts and runs, the harness has power. The gauges are connected to ignition switch and are daisy-chained together. They are also daisy-chained for the 12- side; this connection is going to use the same negative buss as the fuse block accessory circuits and may be part of the fuse block itself.

3. Except for the lighting, the speedometer isn't electrical. It use air pressure. There is a tube running from the speedometer to the stern, where it connects to either a pitot or to the lower unit. The hole in the pitot or lower unit may be clogged, the tube kinked or disconnected, or the speedometer itself is bad.

Re: Maxum electrical issues

Thanks Bob. I was able to resolve most of the issues and your post was very helpful. The lighting problem was due to a bad switch, the temperature gauge was faulty, speedo tube was disconnected. All I need to do is test the tach as it is receiving power but isn't functioning, so I need to verify if the gauge is bad, or if it's not receiving a signal from the engine. I'll keep you posted.
