Cheers Nast, all good advice, I will look at a small solar charger, I don't leave the boat out very often but when I do I would prefer it to be hassle free, lol.

...As for the exhaust, I blocked the one the water was coming out and tried running the engine, water did start coming out the other side, when I removed the tape from the right side all the water came out that side, am I correct in thinking that with an inline 4 there is only one exhaust and it just splits into two exit ports, and that it wouldn't matter which side the water came out?
it's great to find out more about the engine.

Once again cheers.
Paul

Completely correct.

Actually, it's the same for the V engines too. All the exhaust and exiting cooling water goes down each side of the Y-pipe, which joins up at the bottom and it all goes out the prop or the exhaust ports either side of the bottom of the gimbal housing. If you were to park your boat on angle towards the port the water currently doesn't come out, it would stay coming out of that one.... :D So glad they invented gravity... Makes life that much easier, eh?

Chris...

Hi Guys, well i am going to take off the stern dive and change the bellows tomorrow, so thank you for all your advice, i tested the boat again last week and found a small amount of water dripping off the gear cable at the top of the engine, it left salt deposits as it dripped on the right hand side of the engine by the dip stick, any ideas how this is getting in?
It seams strange as the water would have to work its way up the cable in order to drip, it has me puzzled.
Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like there is water in the U joint bellows, possibly the shift shaft seals. or missing o- ring on the drive pull right away. Since its off check alignment and check/grease gimbal bearing and check u-joints

Well I have found the leak, it was a hole in the shift bellow!
Bit more advice please,
1. What is the best way to get the new shift bellow on? And how to feed it back in?
2. I am going to replace the oil line, what is it for and best way to fill it with no air locks?
3. What is the best way to attach the exhaust and uj bellows when putting it back together, looks tricky?
4. Any other top tips or checks
Cheers

Your going to have to remove the shift cable to install the new shift bellows.

Disconnect it from the shift plate at the engine, remove the two "Frankenstein screws" which bite down on the inner core and then try and separate the black outer side (end guide) from the inner core so the cable can pass thru the transom and then thru the bellows. Those Frankenstein screws flatten the core so it may/most likely will be difficult to remove the black slide.

All that said that's why it's easier to just install a new cable since your 80% doing the job anyways. Before you actually pull the cable thru the transom, tie a string or wire to it which can be used to help guide it back into the boat.

Here's a link to Mercruiser Service Manual #14, do yourself a favor and check it out, it will show you the whole process on the bellows and the cable.
